This compact unit contains a top-notch telephone, two digital answering devices and a call-screening device, all wrapped into one, and is designed to stop telemarketing without having your phone ring.

When the privacy function is off, it performs like a full-function phone and answering device with some great additional functions listed below. But, with the privacy function engaged, it becomes an impenetrable block for unwanted calls.

The privacy function is activated by a large red lighted button on the phone used to choose between 60 minutes or always on. Whenever the privacy function is engaged, the light is on, so you know when your calls are being screened. When engaged, a second message is played, and your phone won't ring unless a secret code is entered.

With the ability to record both the standard outgoing message and the "Private TIME" message, you have the option to broadcast a ring-through code or keep it secret. For instance, on the second message, you could record "Hello, you've reached 555 1212. We do not accept telemarketing calls of any kind and please place this number on your "Do Not Call" list. All others press 9." Telemarketers know that ignoring your request and ringing your phone is a willful violation of Federal law, punishable by stiff fines. The other option is to not announce the codes at all. Unfamiliar callers without a code will only be able to leave a message and not ring your phone.

We like the fact that when the privacy function is on, familiar callers can promptly press their code, (1- 4 digits) to get right through. Each of the four user definable codes has it's own distinctive ring, so you know which of the code users calling. Should one of the codes become over distributed, it can be easily changed at any time. Remember, only the Private TIME phone will ring when in the privacy mode when a code is entered, and not any other phones on the premises. Picking up any phone however, will interrupt the Privacy TIME announcements.

Setup was as easy as connecting the phone line, plugging in the power supply, adding back-up batteries, setting the time and recording the two outgoing messages.

The incoming digital recorders are good for up to 68 messages each and messages are easily retrieved, either at the phone, or from a remote location with a touch-tone phone. The Private TIME PT1000 also includes a toll-saver function to save money when retrieving your messages from remote locations. Other pluses are three one-touch speed dial buttons for frequently dialed or emergency numbers, 10 memory dial numbers, a conversation recorder, memo recorder, flash, hold and mute buttons, speakerphone, remote room monitor, and off-hook alert. The unit performs well in conjunction with Caller ID. As an additional safety, if you have forgotten to turn on the answering function, it will be switched on after the 15th ring. If you prefer to mount the unit to the wall, brackets are conveniently included with mounting instructions.

How complicated is the installation process?

The unit plugs into a normal phone system using phone jacks. Simply take the phone jack which was plugged into your phone, and plug it into the Private TIME. Then take the line that comes with the Private TIME and connect it to your telephone. Plug in the Power Unit to the nearest electric outlet, and turn it on !!

What connections are required?

The Private TIME comes with a power cord and telephone cable, and that is all that is needed. The power cord plugs into your electrical outlet and the Private TIME. The cable is used to connect your phone outlet to the Private TIME.

How does the Private TIME eliminate computer-generated telemarketing calls?

The computer dialer obviously will not hear the Private TIME's recorded message. However, when a computer dialer hears a recorded-- rather than a human - voice, it will simply hang up. The computer will not know to remove your name from the list, but it will most likely do so after a number of unsuccessful attempts.
